Besides the Liturgy of the Hours, the monk engages in lectio divina (holy reading). It consists of a leisurely reading of Holy Scripture or some writing conducive to prayer, punctuated by reflection and prayer about the text read.
The reading is applied to the self and one's situation. At times the monk may be led simply to rest in God's loving presence without words, leaving his heart and mind open to any thoughts or inspirations which the Holy Spirit may place there.
This daily exercise leads the monk to an awareness of the loving presence of God, which he recalls at various moments of the day.
